Postdoc or Student Intern – Emissions Retrievals

Job Purpose: GHGSat is building and will launch and operate the world’s first satellite capable of monitoring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from individual industrial sites anywhere on Earth. Our instrument’s high spatial resolution sets us apart from other missions measuring GHG emissions via satellite remote sensing. The candidate will concentrate on extraction of source emission rates based on the vertical column data retrieved by GHGSat over the target sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team and play a leading role in GHGSat’s emissions retrievals development, testing and initial deployment. Specific duties will include:
  • Literature survey to determine state of the art in microscale dispersion and emissions estimation
  • Selecting or adapting dispersion models to generate simulated data to support algorithm development and evaluation
  • Prototyping algorithms for estimating emission rates from simulated data
  • Validation of the algorithms using quantitative evaluation of retrieval errors, and comparison with reference algorithms
  • Interacting with the software team for implementation and optimization of the validated algorithms
  • Integration of dispersion models and emission calculation code with the on-orbit calibration and validation procedures
  • Ability to think critically and creatively about unconventional technical problems and identify the most appropriate method(s) to tackle them,
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a physical science, engineering, earth science or any equivalent background,
  • Experience in scientific computing.
  • Experience in an academic or industrial setting with one or more of the following areas:
    • Inverse dispersion modelling for estimation of source properties
    • Data assimilation techniques
    • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling, including
      • Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) methods for dispersion modelling on local/micro scale (10 m to 100 km)
      • Turbulence resolving meteorology models
  • Experience with one or more of the following software packages
    • WRF-LES (preferred)
    • OpenFOAM (or equivalent)
    • CALPUFF, AERMOD (or equivalent)
  • Eligibility for external funding from a program such as Mitacs Elevate or Accelerate.
