Quick question about Intermediate files

Postby n9405169 » Thu Oct 01, 2009 1:47 pm

This question is probably quick and easy (if you know the answer!).

I am writing my own 'Intermediate Format' files, because I do not have GRIB data.

I understand that 3d fields are written to intermediate files as "horizontal" 2d slices, but I just want to check how the slices are made:
at constant PRESSURE levels,
at constant HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE levels, or

If the answer is that they are at constant pressure, which is what I suspect, how do you give the WRF code information about vertical positions (which I believe the code needs, in order to convert into hydrostatic pressures and form their eta coordinate)? I thought it was via corresponding 2d slices of "GHT", but I have experimented with changing the values given there (and even not giving any GHT data at all!) and the WRF results were unaffected.

If somebody can clarify what is meant by the "horizontal" slice in the intermediate file format, I would be very grateful!

Thanks in advance!
