Running WRF with Canadian GEM initialization

Hi all,

I am running into a slight issue with running WRF while initializing with 25-km Canadian GEM global model grids available from: http://dd.weather.gc.ca/model_gem_global/25km/grib2/

I have had no issues with getting ungrib.exe, metgrid.exe, real.exe or wrf.exe to complete, however I am doing something wrong because the results I get are unrealistic. For example, surface temperatures that are simulated are way too cold. I think this has something to do with the CMC GEM grids not having any skin temperature as an input source to WRF and thus WRF 2-m temperatures are incorrect. Has anyone had success using GEM grids in WRF and could detail their model set-up or see something wrong with mine? Any advice on using CMC GEM in wrf would be greatly appreciated!! Here is how a run mine:

1. Download all grib2 files from the above website for the 00z initialization (I am only running 72 hours out).
2. Use link_grib.csh to link to the downloaded files.
3. Create a new Vtable.GEM for use in ungrib and set up softlink to correct Vtable. Here is my Vtable.GEM:

I recently ran into a similar problem trying to use the GGEM to initialize the WRF. I found out that the WRF wasn't getting any RH input from the CMC; there are no RH files available on the EC server. However, they do have dew point depression which the WRF can use to calculate the RH field. What I did was add this line to the Vtable.CMC:

52 | 100 | * | | DEPR | k | Dewpoint Depression | 0 | 0 | 7 | 100 |

Also, for some reason, METGRID then gives an error after doing this relating to writing out the dewpoint depression field. To allow METGRID to complete I had to add this section to the METGRID.TBL file:

That allows the relative humidity field to be input into the WRF. After that, the presence of non-zero RH and clouds in my run seemed to limit the excessive radiative cooling at the surface. Hope that helps.
