Behavior for wrfsi-generated vs interpolated nests - Repost

I'm encountering strange behavior when nesting with wrfsi-generated fields. I have a series of runs for a severe weather day that look quite good - using a single (wrfsi) coarse grid, with interpolated nested grids from the original outer grid. When I generate nested initial fields from the wrf SI, and make the same run, I get odd behavior in terms of: large gradients indicating inflow boundary problems on the inner grid; excessive sharp MSL pressure gradients not seen at all in the original runs, and a lack of precipitation where a large frontal precipitation band existed before with the same physics.

I am regenerating the initial _d02 (and _d03) fields from wrfsi in search of an error, but thought I would post here in case someone else has encountered this problem. I believe I generated the _d02 and _d03 fields correctly, processing each with real.exe, from inner grid to outermost grid.

Any comments appreciated.
