LiveWRF: a virtual environment to teach numerical modelling

Postby andres_udec » Tue Apr 10, 2012 12:43 pm

Hi all,

We are developing a live DVD with WRF and a bunch of tools pre-installed, primarily as a tool to help teaching numerical modelling.

The idea is to bypass most of the installation, compilation, and dependencies problems and focus on the numerical code itself. It is ready to install in a virtual environment (e.g. VirtualBox) with 1GB RAM and 20GB HD, for example or to install it over a new hard drive or an empty partition.

It is base in Ubuntu and currently we are using WRFv3.1 and IDV and grads for visualization. NetCDF, nco, ncview, gfortran, latex are also there. Due to size constrains, only 10m geog data are included.

Please feel to try it and please let us know what other tools or packages could be added to it.

Regards,

Andres

As complication of WRF is really tough (I have never succeeded), I really appreciate the work by Andres Sepulveda from University of Concepcion. We can just have the full environment without having compilation. :D

May andres_udec please update the environment to a more-updated version of software packages?

Also, anyone on this forum can help to test? Anyone has comment on his work?

Thanks!

Hi,

Thank your for your interest. We use LiveWRF in a undergraduate course at University of Concepcion. It helps the students to go directly into the model and do a simple forecast, test cases, etc. This way the homework is more oriented towards understanding the plots or creating/adapting new functions to analyze the results.

In the long run, you need to know how to compile, change, patch, etc the model, but we have found is very motivating for students to be able to do a simulation right away and in their own laptops. The main problem becomes downloding GFS or FNL, since is slow her.

We will update the code soon, to WRF and WPS 3.4.1. The idea would be to have a test case ready to run (probably with GFS of FNL files included in LiveWRF) and data to run MET or other validation package.

Anyways, thanks for the interest and any comment or contribution is welcome!

Andres

in the readme, you have mentioned that there is a sample dataset in /atmos/WRF/GFS. But it seems that I couldn't find it. Please fix it.

I also suggest to post compilation steps so that we can know its configurations.

I have tried once on my virtual machine, and it works. The output is incorrect, but it should be my problem on settings.

This is my experience on using LiveWRF, note that it is in Chinese.

Hi, here is a simple script to do download GFS data for a 72h forecast.

Copy/past it into a file named, for example "get_GFS.csh", make it executable (chmow u+x get_GFS.csh) and run it to get GFS files for 72, every 3 h

#!/bin/csh
#
# Get GFS files for the next 72h
#
# 28/09/2012 Andres Sepulveda - University of Concepcion (andres@dgeo.udec.cl)
# Adapted from a script of Rodrigo Sanchez - University of Chile (DGF)
#

set f=`date +%Y%m%d`
set hracb=00
set URL = "ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod"
set WGET=/usr/bin/wget

foreach hra ( 00 03 06 09 12 15 18 21 24 27 30 33 36 39 42 45 48 51 54 57 60 63 66 69 72 )
$WGET -t 0 ${URL}/gfs.${f}${hracb}/gfs.t${hracb}z.pgrb2f${hra}
end

I will make a description of the compilation process, no problem. The current configuration was compiled with gfortran, runs in serial mode, and allows static nesting.

Hi all,

Just a notice that LiveWRF_1.2 is available. It uses WRF and WPS 3.4.1

Please check it at test it at http://ronin.dgeo.udec.cl/LiveWRF

Regards,

Andres

Hi,

I had some issues because of the ownership of the atmos directory. The livewrf account does not have write acccess to those directories. I had to either change the ownership or copy the files and run everything from the livewrf directory.

Could you post your DomainWizard.cfg?

mine looks like

andres-laptop
/atmos/WRF/WPS
/atmos/WRF/geog
/atmos/WRF/Dominios

so your new Domains should be created under

/atmos/WRF/Dominios (or Domains)

You specify this the first time you run the DomainWizard

In any case, you can change the permissions with

sudo chown -R livewrf:livewrf /atmos

the sudo passwd is livewrf, by default
