AMD Opteron vs Intel Xeon

Postby golan » Fri Sep 28, 2012 4:21 am

Hi All,

I know that this issue was discussed several times in the past. Yet, we couldn't make up our minds based on these old posts. We are about to buy a small cluster (about 4-5 nodes) that will be mainly used for WRF and MITgcm computations. The question is the cost/benefit ratio--do the more expensive Xeon processors perform much better than the cheaper AMD processors? We are thinking about the AMD 6200 series processors (4 CPUs per node, each cpu has 16 cores) versus the xeon 5670 (or xeon E5-2660) processors or similar. Did anyone run a benchmark to compare such two configurations?
For the same price we can get many more AMD cores. However, we are not sure whether the performance per core in the AMD is the same as the performance per core in the Xeon.
Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Golan

Did you ever get an answer?

Did you purchase one or the other? Did you get full cpu performance with both MITgcm and WRF?

We are in the midst of the same issue?

Thank Dierk

Hi Dierk,

We did run some tests on a machine with 4 AMD Opteron 6284 processors and compared that with runs on Intel Xeon E5-2670 processors. We could not get any improvement in the run time when moving from 32 to 64 cores on the AMD machine. We tried various configurations including locking the processes to the cores etc. to no avail. In addition, the run time on 32 cores was slower (~30% ) than the run time on the E5-2670 when using the same # of cores. We decided to go for the Xeon.

What is the final size of your cluster?

Do you have many cluster nodes
4 x 16 = 64 per node... infiniband?

Have you run MITgcm on the cluster with the same success?

We don't have our cluster yet.
The companies interested to sell us the cluster ran benchmark tests of WRF and MITgcm (we provided the files).
The tests were done on 16-256 cores.
It looks like our cluster will be 8 nodes each with 16 cores (2 processors).
Nodes connected with infiniband (from the tests it looks like there is no difference between QDR and FDR).
