Plotting hurricane track

Postby Shepherd_NZ » Sun Apr 27, 2008 11:20 pm

Hi there,
I'm a masters student at the Centre For Atmospheric Research, Canterbury University, Christchurch, New Zealand. I'm doing some exciting modelling of hurricanes using WRF.

I am wanting to plot hurricane track with RIP4. Unfortunately the team here haven't done this kind of work, and I'm still rather new to this myself, we don't have a script written for the PST which alllows track to be plotted.
Can anyone help me out and provide me with a script?

Thanks,
Tristan Shepherd.

Ploting the bullte in the hurrican center.
Connect the bullte with line, and you can plot the hurrican track!!
=======================================
feld=bullte;ptyp=hb;crsa=x1,y1;tslb=0.2
feld=bullte;ptyp=hb;crsa=x2,y2;tslb=0.2
feld=line;ptyp=hb;crsa=x1,y1;crsb=x2,y2;linw=2
=======================================
The most improtant is how to decide the center of your hurrican.

Many thanks for the reply and the script, though it hasn't been much help at this stage, and there is nothing more I'd like than for it to work!
Looking under section 6 of the RIP4 manual, I see some instructions for setting up script in the PST.
Isn't 'feld' meant to be set to either arrow, ribbon, swarm, gridswarm, or circle? And what about 'tifl.feld'?

All I have for trajectory calculation, is the following in my rip_sample.in file (this appears with the &userin and colour table before the PST):

&trajcalc
rtim=15,ctim=6,dtfile=3600.,dttraj=600.,vctraj='s',
xjtraj=95,90,85,80,75,70,65,80.6,80.6,80.6,80.6,80.6,80.6,
yitraj=50,55,60,65,70,75,80,77,77,77,77,77,77,
zktraj=25,25,25,25,25,25,25,27,25,22,19,16,13,
ihydrometeor=0

Any ideas? Anyone?

Many thanks.

trajectories are not tracks.

There is feld=track for plotting typhoon/hurricane tracks with objectively-determined tracks.
Search for track in the users' guide http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/docs/ripug.htm for details.

Previous post by Chishin provided another way for plotting tracks.
That way, you will need to first find the locations of hurricanes with your own program.

I have recently realised this is the case, that they are not the same thing. I definitely want to plot hurricane track, not trajectories.
I have written some prompt for RIP to plot track, but all I am getting is a blank map. RIP seems to understand what I am asking it to do without keyword tynt, but when I type 'tynt' it doesn't recognise it.
Here is a sample of the code I am using to attempt to plot track, which gives me a blank map. If I put tynt in there, I get an error message in my rip.out file.

feld=track; ptyp=hb; colr=red;>
cmth=cont; smth=0
feld=tic; ptyp=hb; axlg=0; axtg=0
feld=map; ptyp=hb; ouds=solid; oulw=2; cint=10; mllm=land

Is there a process or step I am missing when generating my RIP output?

A working example is included in the comments at the top of src/typhoon.f

Take note that ptimes should be set to a single time.

cmth and smth are meaningless for track. I recommend drawing the map first, then the track. tynt has a default value of 1 hour.

Hi,
thanks for the info. I have located the file, and attempted to use that code, although I am still getting the following error message:
Welcome to your friendly RIP output file !
Color Names and Fractions Defined
Get header info.
Don't recognize the plot specifier.
For ipl,ipos= 18 44
at line 66
c4 = "tynt"
in the following string:
feld=track;ptyp=hb;colr=dark.red;tslb=.014;tynt=6

RIP doesn't seem to recognise the keyword tynt , what is the problem here? When I remove tynt the program runs but with no track, just a map.

I notice that there is a vast amount of usercode in the typhoon.f file. Does this need to be implemented somewhere?

Many thanks.

I am also interested in plotting a hurricane track using RIP. How did you go about doing so if I may ask?

Thanks

Hi there.
Make sure you are using RIP Version 4.4 or higher. Try this code and see if it works. You simply run RIP normally and use this namelist file. You will need to alter 'ptimes' to suit the length of your simulation. You'll also need to put your colour table in. Please let me know how you go.
Cheers,
Tristan
